Gynecomastia surgery (male breast reduction)

Dr Vlad ILLIE specialises in gynecomastia surgery, using minimal scarring techniques. Gynecomastia is a frequently encountered condition characterised by the enlargement of breast tissue in men and boys, often surpassing the usual proportions. Symptoms can range from a slight increase in tissue around the nipples to more noticeable and enlarged breasts. This condition can affect one or both breasts and may occasionally be accompanied by tenderness and discomfort in the breast tissue.

While gynecomastia is generally benign, its impact on body confidence can be substantial. This condition is most commonly observed in teenage boys and older men and can be triggered by various factors, including hormone imbalances, puberty, advancing age, and obesity.

The recovery period following gynecomastia surgery can vary from patient to patient and depends on the type of activities you plan to resume. Although the incisions made during the procedure are typically small, liposuction may result in a larger hidden wound beneath the skin.

After surgery, rest is essential for gradual healing. Sleep with a slightly elevated upper body to reduce swelling and bruising. Expect to return to work in 5-7 days and resume light exercise in 2 weeks, avoiding strenuous upper body activities for at least 3 weeks. Minor initial swelling, bruising, and unevenness are common.

Contact us for heavy bleeding, pain, excessive swelling, or fluid pockets. Temporary numbness or tingling can occur due to nerve irritation, usually resolving in 6 months. A follow-up visit is necessary 7-14 days after surgery, and Dr. ILLIE will conduct a check-up around 6 weeks later.

The final result appears in 6-9 months, and gynecomastia typically doesn’t recur after gland removal.

Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck surgery)

Men have two primary surgical options when considering ways to achieve a flatter stomach. The male tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, removes excess abdominal skin and tightens muscles. Liposuction, though, only targets localised fat deposits.

It is important to note that a tummy tuck isn’t for weight loss. Ideal candidates are usually close to their target weight. Often, it’s combined with liposuction to address love handles and waist fat, aiming for a firm, flat abdomen.

Men may undergo abdominoplasty following weight loss to address concerns related to excess skin. Despite attempts to manage weight through diet and exercise, loose skin can persist, especially after weight fluctuations. While traditional methods focus on fat reduction, surgical intervention may be necessary to address excess skin post-weight loss. Male tummy tucks involve muscle tightening and skin removal to achieve a flatter and trimmer stomach.  The surgery typically takes about two to three hours under general anaesthesia and involves a substantial incision above the pubic area extending from hip to hip, with potential risks such as infection. Dr ILLIE is dedicated to expert cosmetic surgery and thorough aftercare, achieving notable before-and-after results.

Male body contouring surgery after weight loss

Apart from abdominoplasty, body contouring surgery encompasses a variety of other procedures, addressing the torso and upper legs to sculpt the abdomen, hips, back, buttocks, thighs and chest area. The approach may include procedures like:

  • extended abdominoplasty
  • Fleur de Lis abdominoplasty
  • circumferential abdominoplasty (belt lipectomy)
  • upper body lift
  • lower body lift

These procedures can help patients with the challenges of loose, sagging skin and uneven contours, resulting in a firmer and better-defined physique.  Dr Vlad ILLIE is a specialist plastic surgeon with expertise in total body lift and body contouring surgery in Sydney.

Male facelift

A facelift procedure presents an option for men seeking to modify their facial appearance, improve jawline definition, and address diminished facial volume. This procedure effectively addresses the visible signs of aging by eliminating excess fat, tightening underlying facial muscles, and repositioning or removing sagging skin.

Facelift surgery is often combined with complementary procedures like blepharoplasty and brow or neck lifts to achieve a harmonious aspect. Dr ILLIE’s skill and expertise ensure that each facelift results in a natural appearance that preserves distinctive masculine features.

Men’s facial characteristics, such as strong muscle mass, a prominent jawline, and heavy skin with hair follicles, require a tailored surgical approach. Aging in men can lead to a less defined jaw, fatty deposits in the neck, eye area hollowing, and facial volume loss. A male facelift focuses on enhancing natural features while restoring definition, always striving for a balanced, natural result.

Key considerations for male facelift:

  • Redefining the jawline is a common goal, but it’s essential to note that a facelift alone won’t physically add volume to a receding chin. However, you can discuss the option of a chin implant with Dr ILLIE during the consultation.
  • Men often sport short haircuts, necessitating careful scar placement. Scar-minimizing and hair-preserving techniques are essential for discreet incisions.
  • Individual needs and expectations vary, and Dr ILLIE discusses these during consultations.

Dr Vlad ILLIE offers an array of facelift surgery options tailored to your unique requirements. His most popular approaches include mini facelifts and deep plane facelifts, with or without neck lifts. Dr Vlad Illie is an expert in various modern methods of approaching a facelift, including altering the Superficial Musculo Aponeurotic System (SMAS), the deep layer of tissue that supports the skin. He tailors his approach to each patient, adjusting the SMAS in different ways, such as cutting, folding, or moving it and securing it. His skill and experience allow him to create natural and lasting results. Due to Dr ILLIE’s extensive expertise, you can achieve your aesthetic goals through the ideal facelift technique suited to your specific needs.

Recovery for men is typically faster due to their thicker, more vascular skin, allowing them to return to work after two weeks and engage in sports after six weeks.

Male rhinoplasty (nose surgery)

Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a “nose job”, aims to create a more balanced and proportional nose shape in alignment with your overall facial appearance. Beyond aesthetics, rhinoplasty can also address breathing issues and repair nose injuries like those from sports or accidents. Being open and honest about your goals is important during your consultation with Dr ILLIE. A nose job not only reshapes your nose but it can also enhance other facial features, such as the eye area.

During the open rhinoplasty, an incision is made across the columella, the strip of tissue between the nostrils, providing access to the underlying nasal structures. This approach allows for precise adjustments to the bone, cartilage, and tissue of the nose, tailored to meet your desired aesthetic goals. By carefully sculpting and reshaping these components, we can address concerns such as a dorsal hump, bulbous tip, or asymmetry, resulting in a more balanced and harmonious facial profile.

After the procedure, you can expect some swelling and the placement of a plaster cast on your nose for 7-10 days. Bruising around the nose and eyes is common but will fade over the following weeks. Many men opt for a brief work break to recover comfortably at home.

Corrective surgery and scar revision

Corrective surgery and scar revision address physical abnormalities, defects, and imperfections. While it can enhance one’s appearance, its primary focus is on rectifying scar tissue issues, developmental and birth defects, burns, and the aftermath of diseases and injuries. By reconstructing damaged areas of the face or body, corrective surgery seeks to address both functionality and aesthetics. This encompasses a diverse range of procedures, including skin reconstruction following cancer, scar repair from severe burns or trauma, and the correction of congenital anomalies.

Ultimately, corrective surgery plays an integral role in enhancing overall well-being by effectively restoring and refining areas of the body impacted by challenging scarring tissue, defects, diseases, or injuries.

How much will it cost?

Following the detailed consultation with Dr Vlad ILLIE, you will receive a comprehensive breakdown of the total expenses associated with the procedure.

It is important to note that certain procedures, if deemed medically necessary, may qualify for partial coverage through your private health fund. The costs linked to each procedure vary based on several considerations, including the anaesthetist’s fee, fees for a private hospital or day surgical facility, the potential necessity for post-operative garments, the duration of hospital stay, and the potential requirement for other related procedures to be performed simultaneously. Additionally, in some cases there may be a fee associated with a surgical assistant. D

Risks and complications

Male plastic surgery, which includes procedures like gynecomastia correction, body contouring, and facial surgery, comes with potential risks and complications like all surgical procedures. Dr ILLIE will discuss these in detail during the assessment. Here are some general risks associated with these types of male plastic surgeries:

Gynecomastia correction:

  1. Bleeding and hematoma: Excessive bleeding or the formation of a hematoma (collection of blood) can occur, requiring surgical intervention.
  2. Infection: Infections at the incision sites are possible, though rare. Antibiotics are often prescribed to minimise this risk.
  3. Changes in sensation: Temporary or permanent changes in nipple or chest skin sensation may occur due to nerve damage during surgery.
  4. Asymmetry: Achieving perfect symmetry can be challenging, and the final results may have some degree of asymmetry.
  5. Scarring: While efforts are made to minimise the appearance of scarring, some scarring is inevitable. Incisions are typically placed strategically to be less noticeable.

Body contouring (e.g., liposuction, tummy tuck):

  1. Fluid accumulation: Fluid may accumulate under the skin, requiring drainage to prevent complications.
  2. Skin irregularities: Uneven skin contours or irregularities may occur, especially with liposuction.
  3. Poor wound healing: Some individuals may experience delayed wound healing, which may result in increased scarring.
  4. Seroma formation: Fluid-filled pockets (seromas) may form, requiring drainage.
  5. Infection: Infections can occur at incision sites. Following postoperative care instructions and taking prescribed antibiotics is essential.

Facial surgery (e.g., face lift, rhinoplasty):

  1. Bruising and swelling: Temporary bruising and swelling are common and typically resolve with time.
  2. Nerve injury: Facial nerves may be injured during surgery, leading to temporary or, rarely, permanent numbness, weakness, or altered facial expressions.
  3. Scarring: While efforts are made to minimise the appearance of scarring, some scarring is inevitable. Incisions are typically placed strategically to be less noticeable.
  4. Asymmetry: Achieving perfect symmetry is challenging, and the final results may have some degree of asymmetry.
  5. Changes in hairline: There may be changes to the hairline for certain facial procedures, particularly in the temple area.
  6. Anaesthesia risks: Risks associated with general anaesthesia, although rare, include allergic reactions and respiratory issues.

Thorough preoperative discussions and adherence to postoperative care instructions can help minimise risks and optimise outcomes. Dr ILLIE will further advise you on how possible complications are addressed and what you can do to minimise risks.
